2007 Basinger Reunion

Basinger family gathers for annual reunion

The family of the late Maggie Ola Bullock and James Frank Basinger Sr. gathered on Saturday, May 26, 2007, for their annual family reunion at the Sarepta Community Building in Sarepta.

Six of the seven living Basinger children were in attendance – James “Jimmy” Frank Basinger Jr., Leo Riley “Sonny” Staggs, Bill Basinger Sr., Joyce Basinger Boyett, Eugene Basinger Sr. and Carolyn Basinger Palmer. Carl Bassinger Sr. was unable to attend this year.

Colette Alfred-Sikes welcomed 86 family members and friends who arrived Saturday morning at the Sarepta Community Building.

Two family members who passed during the previous year were remembered on a memory board – Evie Burrell Basinger and Billy Cole. Seven births were celebrated since the last reunion – Ethan Carter Bright, Cohl Allen Hinton, Kielerr Reece Alfred, Ryan Autry Lauw, Jack Harrison Terry, Kameron Bailey Navarre and Sky Rose Spence.

Colby Boykin, almost five years old, entertained the family by performing “Special Me.” James “Jimmy” Frank Basinger Jr. asked the blessing before the delicious lunch was served. Many casseroles, vegetables and desserts were prepared.

Family members who traveled a great distance to attend the family reunion spent the weekend at Bass Haven Lodge in Taylor, Ark. The families wish to thank Bass Haven owner, Rose Johnson, for all her hospitality extended to them during the weekend.

Florence Basinger Morgan family – Debbie Morgan of Springhill; Ludy and Larry Williams, Jeannie, Christabelle, Chelby Hinton, all of Dubberly; Lana, Pat, Caden and Cohl Hinton, all of Ashdown, Ark.; and Jodi, Charlie, Colby and Blaire Boykin and Mary Pevy, all of Minden.

Leon Howell Basinger 1924-2009

Funeral services for Leon Howell Basinger, 84, of Ringgold, were held Sunday, June 28, 2009, at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Ringgold, under the direction of Rockett Funeral Home of Ringgold.

Officiating was the Rev. Ed Dilworth. Burial followed at Providence Cemetery in Ringgold.

Mr. Basinger was born Aug. 30, 1924, in Fryeburg and passed away June 26, 2009, at the Ringgold Nursing and Rehab Center.
After his retirement from Seafarers Shipping Company in 1983, he worked for his daughter at Marsha’s Flowers in Minden, for 20 years helping her with deliveries.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Basinger; granddaughter, Beth Watts Bridges; and several siblings.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha and Wally Watts of Minden and Janice and Gerald Northcutt of Ringgold; grandchildren,
Craig Watts and his wife, Suzy, Jessica Bates and her husband, SSG Jason Bates, Jerry Northcutt and Jordan Northcutt; great-grandchildren, Paige and Kallie Bates and Anna Lake Watts; brother, D. T. “Bub” Basinger and his wife, Faye, of Ringgold; and a host of other relatives and friends. He is also survived by a good and faithful friend and coffee drinker, Jim Barnette.
The family would like to thank the Ringgold Nursing and Rehab Center and Buster Bailey and nurses of the Agape Hospice.

2009 Basinger Reunion

Seventy-seven descendants and friends of the late Maggie Ola Bullock and James Frank Basinger, Sr. from eight states gathered for the annual Basinger Family Reunion on Saturday, May 23, at the Sarepta Community Building in Sarepta.
Five of the six living children of the Basingers were in attendance. Colette Alfred-Sikes extended the welcome and Leo Riley "Sonny" Staggs, who passed away July 25, 2008, was remembered.
A descendant book of Maggie Ola Bullock and James Frank Basinger, Sr. compiled by Colette Alfred-Sikes was presented to each family and congratulations were extended to Paula Tripp and Wendell Wright on their upcoming marriage.

Many family members expressed their excitement over the success of The Minute Magazine, which is owned and published by Jackie Lewis and Tiffany Byram.

Bill Haynes asked the blessing before everyone enjoyed the abundant pot-luck lunch.

Leo Riley "Sonny" Staggs


SAREPTA, LA- Funeral services for Mr. Leo Riley "Sonny" Staggs, age 84, will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at the Kings Corner Assembly of God with Rev. Jeff Manuel and Rev. Mike Richardson officiating. Burial will be in the Old Sarepta Cemetery under the direction of Bailey Mortuary, Springhill, LA.

Leo Riley "Sonny" Staggs, a lifelong resident of this area, died Thursday, July 25, 2008 in Shreveport, after a brief illness. He was born on July 22, 1924 to James Rush and Leola Basinger Staggs in Sarepta, LA. After his mother died, along with his twin brother, Leon Rush Staggs, in childbirth, he was raised by his maternal grandparents, James Frank and Maggie Ola Bullock Basinger.

Mr. Staggs was proud to have served his country during World War II in the US Army and was stationed at New Guinea. After returning from the war, he was employed with Armco Steel for more than 30 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Nell Morgan Staggs of Sarepta; daughter, Shirley Giddings and husband, Charles of Sarepta; grandchildren, whom he raised, Randall and Heather Alfred of Sarepta, Colette Alfred-Sikes and Jody Sikes of Minden and Chuck Warford of Sarepta; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Presley, Kielerr and Chastan Alfred, all of Sarepta. Additional survivors are his sisters, Joyce Basinger Boyett of Shreveport and Carolyn Basinger Palmer and husband, Harold of Sarepta; brothers, Jimmy Basinger and wife, Dot of Conway, AR, Carl Basinger of Springhill, LA, Bill Basinger and wife, Clara of Trinity, TX and Eugene Basinger and wife, Ellawease of West Memphis, AR.

Though it breaks our hearts to lose him, we know that he will be preparing our next happy home in Heaven. He'll forever be remembered for his wonderful stories, laid back personality and those baby blue eyes.

The family of the late Maggie Ola Bullock and James Frank Basinger, Sr. gathered on Saturday, May 24, 2008 for their
annual family reunion at the Sarepta Community Building in Sarepta.
Five of the seven living Basinger children were in attendance—Leo Riley “Sonny” Staggs, Bill
Basinger, Sr., Joyce Basinger Boyett, Eugene Basinger, Sr. and Carolyn Basinger Palmer. James “Jimmy”
Frank Basinger, Jr., and Carl Bassinger, Sr., were not able to attend this year.
Nearly thirty family members who wanted to spend the weekend together stayed at Bass Haven Lodge in Taylor, Ark. On
Friday evening, Jody Sikes and Chuck Warford prepared hamburgers and hot dogs for everyone. The children enjoyed
swimming, fishing, playing games and eating watermelon. The adults had a great time reminiscing, playing cards and
laughing. Supper on Saturday was brisket and loaded baked potatoes prepared by Tony and Gretchen Boyett.

On Saturday morning, Colette Alfred-Sikes welcomed 93 family members and friends who arrived at the Sarepta
Community Building. Those in attendance decided to make a donation to the Old Sarepta Cemetery Fund. Grandma and
Grandpa Basinger also surprised Colette and Jody Sikes with a cash housewarming gift that the family had collected.
Colette was very touched by the thoughtfulness of everyone.
Tony Boyett asked the blessing before the delicious lunch was served. An abundance of meats, casseroles, vegetables
and desserts were available.
